When I first met one of my clients she was experiencing low energy, had excess weight that she wanted to lose especially in her legs and midsection, had aches and pains in her lower back and shoulders and was stressed out from having a "to do" list as long as she was tall! She had tried several methods to alleviate her problems already. She tried Pilates, but her legs didn't get any thinner. She was drinking coffee constantly, and feeling even more drained than ever before. She was seeing a chiropractor regularly, but her back and shoulders were still bothering her continually. She tried drinking wine to relieve her stress, which only helped temporarily. In the end, all of her problems were still there. She had been resistant to trying yoga, because she believed it was some strange, foreign practice where people had to sit in a corner in an impossible pretzel looking position, chanting strange words to a Hindu statue. Isn't it funny how the answer to what you're seeking is always in the last place you look? She finally decided to try yoga. Wow was she surprised! Before her first session, I went over a thorough questionnaire to assess where she was currently and what her goals were. That way I was able to custom design a program specifically to match her needs. She wanted to tone the muscles in her lower body, relieve stress and improve her flexibility. The first session, I came to her house, making it convenient for her and she felt more comfortable knowing that she would have hands on personal attention throughout the entire session. Before we began, I explained what she should expect during the session, so nothing would come as a surprise. I told her that I would be demonstrating, as well as verbally cueing her every step of the way. I explained that there may be some poses that she may find strange, but reassured her that I would not put her into any positions that would lead to her injury. Then I shared with her the breathing techniques that we use in yoga that help to balance the mind and calm the body. During the session, we laughed, we breathed, we sighed loud sounds of relief after difficult poses, and had an over all great time! At the end of the session, she melted into a deep state of relaxation while laying on her back, listening to the calming sound of tranquil music and my voice guiding her through the meditation process (Sivasana). She was so grateful that I delivered to her exactly what I said I would. She is now a permanent yoga client of mine and looks forward to her private yoga sessions with me each week. She is getting stronger, her muscles are looking more toned and her stress levels are much lower on a daily basis, due to the "homework" assignments I have given her to do on her own when I can't be with her. Then we will map out your goals for the future and where you are going. 4. Finally I will teach you how to, and then motivate and inspire you to reach those goals.
